THE
OTHER ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION PROBLEM: AMERICANS IN MEXICO.
While
Donald Trump rails against the immigrants coming illegally to the U.S. from
Mexico, there is actually another surge of illegal immigration flowing across
the same border. That is, Americans
living illegally in Mexico.
Here are
some facts:
- In
2015, approximately 739,168 American citizens lived in Mexico and of those
only 65,302 were legal residents;
- The
rest, approximately 91.2% were there illegally;
· And the number has risen 40% since.
The U.S. State Department now reports
that almost a million Americans are currently residing in
Mexico
- And of those, 934,698 or 93% are there
illegally.
How
has Mexico responded to this border problem? Quite different from our
government. Undocumented Americans in Mexico are not hunted down by agents or detained
indefinitely in jails; they are not scapegoated by politicians; they are not
even called “illegal aliens”.
Overwhelmingly, they have been welcomed in Mexico.
In San Miguel de
Allende, where about 10 percent of the city’s 100,000 residents
are U.S. citizens, Mayor Luis Alberto Villareal delivers his annual State of
the Municipality address in English and Spanish.
“Despite
the fact that Donald Trump insults my country every day, here we receive the
entire international community, beginning with Americans, with open arms and
hearts,” Villareal said.
Typically, Americans overstay their six-month
visas, often settling permanently in Mexico without papers. Mexican authorities has shown little concern over
the other border problem. At worst,
Americans found to be living illegally in Mexico are subject to a small fine.
“We have
never pressured them to have their documents in order,” says Mexican Foreign
Minister Marcelo Ebrard. “We like people who come to work and help the economy
of the city — like Mexicans do in the United States.”
